Richie was in the two Lugia episodes...

Lugia episodes? You mean in master quest? Because richie didn't appear in Johto or Johto Champions League.

I've always seen them as a sort of motherly/daughter role.
I enjoyed a fanfic I read once- where Mrs.Ketchum was doing a toast, she said;
"To all of Ash's friends, Dawn, Brock, May, Tracey (blahahaha xD) I see you all as my daughters, and Ash sees you as his sisters and brothers."
And then she looks at Misty, and she says;
"But, Misty, I don't see you as one of Ash's sisters, but i do see you as a daughter. I do not, however, think Ash cares for you in that way. You see, I think it would be wrong for Ash to love some one like a sister the way he loves you, its much more than sibling love, its real love."
